Indigenous Collections

We are committed to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and acknowledge that Aboriginal people have a rich and continuous connection to the Bayside area. The area now known as Bayside represented only a small portion of the Bunurong territory, which extended north along a small coastal strip adjacent to Port Phillip Bay; and to the south of Mordialloc Creek including land around Western Port and the Mornington Peninsula.

In 2006, Bayside Libraries developed an Indigenous collection. The spine labels on all of these books are marked with a distinctive motif designed by Ellen Jose, a local artist from the Torres Strait Islands. This unique design provides easy and distinctive identification for items in our collection.

Beaumaris, Brighton and Sandringham libraries hold collections of items relating to Australia's indigenous peoples and culture. The Indigenous Collection includes recently published books as well as historical texts. All items are available for loan.
