Sepia colour tinted photograph. Captain David Masterton (1816-1888)was born in West Lothian, Scotland and captained the ship Ferzepore to Melb in 1852. By 1853 he had purchased the vessel "Elizabeth" and traded coastally and also between Melbourne and China. In 1853 he purchased several Brighton allotments. In 1855 he traded as a merchant in Melbourne. He occupied "Biwa" in North Road and "Rosemount/Thule" which was in New Street, now in Thule Court. He was a Brighton councillor from 1874-1882. In 1877 he was Mayor of Brighton.
