Volga region, 1920-1930s. Jacob Bach - a Russian German, is a teacher in the colony Gandenthal. He turned away from the world a long time ago and raises his only daughter, Anche, on a secluded farm. He writes fairy tales, which miraculously and tragically occur in real life.
