There was a six-year pause after Otello before Verdi wrote his last opera Falstaff (1893), once more based on Shakespeare (from the c. 1600 comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor and his history King Henry IV). He again collaborated with the young, ‘wild’ librettist Arrigo Boito. This production is also from 2001, the 100th anniversary of Verdi’s death. Herbert Wernicke staged this completely new interpretation, placing the action in the ‘original’ time of King Henry IV. Performed at the Festival de Musique d’Aix-en-Provence in July of that year, this was one of his last great undertakings before his unexpected death in 2002, at the age of only 56. The production, under the musical direction of the young Spanish conductor Enrique Mazzola, later moved to Lisbon (December 2001) and Paris (June 2002)..
