To save the marriage of Harry Hunter (Eli Wallach), his best friend, attorney David Sloane (Dean Martin) agrees to pursuade Muriel (Anne Jackson), Harry's mistress, to leave him. David mistakes attractive blonde Carol Corman (Stella Stevens) for Muriel. A confirmed bachelor, David realizes he must escape from Carol and does so by inventing a "promise" made on his first wife's deathbed never to remarry. When Carol learns David is lying about the promise and the first wife, she provokes David's jealousy by implying that she is sleeping with his friends.
