No snow in December : an autobiographical novel

Lewitt, Maria, 1924-1985
Books
In 1949, Irene and Julek made their landfall in Australia and began a new life half a world from home and family. There are some problems: strange and desolate landscapes, job opportunities limited by suspicion of 'reffos', exploitative fellow Poles, language barriers, odd customs like watering one's children in summer, money, real and imagined discrimination...But the spectre of the war years haunts Irena - particularly after a chance meeting with an acquaintance from her youth, the bitter, cynical Victor. Still, she slowly becomes, to some extent, an Australian. Based on her own experience, No snow in December is a revealing, sensitive and humorous evocation of the migrant experience in Australia.
