This publication, Pharaoh, accompanies the NGV exhibition of the same name. Pharaoh explores the ideals, symbolism and ideology of Egyptian kingship, but also seeks to uncover the realities behind these images. The exhibition presents a number of highlights from the British Museum's Egyptian collection, one of the most comprehensive outside Egypt, from delicately crafted pieces of jewellery to grandiose sculptures, revealing the multiple skills of ancient Egyptian artists. The Pharaoh exhibit is included in the NGV's exhibit as the twentieth Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition series, which brings art and culture from around the world to Melbourne. Pharaoh is an extensive international touring exhibition of Egyptian art and culture mounted by the British Museum and the largest ever to be staged in Australia. -- Directors forward and Government Message.
