The story of Ian Ball, of Richmond, kicked out of school at 13 only to build a tiling business with 20 tilers. In a chance meeting on the Mornington Peninsula, he struck up a deal to tile some holiday shacks and from there he and his business partners built not one but two empires. The Knowles Group would go on to be the first private companies to build, own and manage retirement villages, changing the style from cottages without services to the modern luxury accommodation and services. The second empire grew from the remainder after that business was sold. It is now arguably the largest aged care provider in private hands, Arcare. Ian's is a personal story of quiet ambition, deep seated loves, epiphanies in politics and business and a desire to improve the lives of our aging population. Described as one of Australia's great business minds. A book full of characters from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, of soaring to great heights and nearly losing it all. It also details the backstory of the Dendy Brighton and Jackalope.
