This painting of Captain George Ward Cole was painted by the portrait painter John Irvine, Edinburgh in 1858. Captain Ward Cole married Thomas Anne McCrea in 1842 and settled at St Nininans in Brighton. He was born in 1793 and died in 1879. He was a member of the Legislative Council in 1863. In 1841 he had purchased the site known as Cole's Wharf. He had formerly been an officer in the Royal Navy and the Mercantile Marine service and captained his own ships.
