Captain David Masterton (1816-1888) was born in West Lothian, Scotland and captained the ship "Ferozepore" to Melbourne in 1852. By 1853 he had purchased the vessel "Elizabeth" and traded coastally and also between Melbourne and China. In 1853 he purchased several Brighton allotments. In 1855 he traded as a merchant in Melbourne. He occupied `Biwa' in North Road and `Rosemount/Thule' which was in New Street, now in Thurle Court. He was a Brighton Councillor from 1874-1882.
