Boardmounted photograph, poor condition. Jonathon Binns Were was born 1809, arrived in Melbourne 1839. 1841 became Henry Dendy's land agent and assumed halfshare in Dendy Estate. 1843 bankruptcy. 1840 became Chairman of Chamber of Commerce and first J.P. appointed for Port Philip. 1856 elected to Brighton for Legislative Assembly. Second bankruptcy in 1857 caused his retirement. 1859 Chairman and secretary of Stock Exchange. He lived at Moorabbin House in Brighton and ran the Melbourne Exhibition in 1881. He died in 1885.
