Accessibility

Bayside Library Service strives to be a welcoming and functional space for people of all abilities. We are committed to ensuring our services are accessible to all community members, and we have resources available for use in the library and at home.

If you have any questions of suggestions concerning accessibility at the library, please contact our Community Services Librarian.

Visiting The Library

All Bayside Library Service locations provide accessible parking spaces, wheelchair access to the building, accessible toilets and automatic doors. The multi-use room at Sandringham Library has a hearing loop.

For children visiting the library, try sharing Our Library by Donna Rawlins to prepare them for their visit.

Collections

Large Print

There is a large print section for adult readers in each library. Large-print materials are most commonly available in 16- to 18-point type. A large print edition of Reader’s Digest magazine can be borrowed from the Hampton Library. The large print section also includes books in a font that may be helpful for dyslexic readers.

Talking Books on CD

We have a wide range of talking books for adults, young adults and children. They are available in CD and MP3 formats.

eLibrary Collection

One of great things about eBooks is their accessibility. A font is available on iOS and Android that makes text more readable for dyslexic users. Our BorrowBox app is optimised to work with Apple's VoiceOver functionality to enable the eBook to be 'read' aloud simply by tapping the screen. You can also adjust the display to create the best reading experience for you. Heavy print editions only weigh as much as your device, which is great if you've reached a point in your life when holding books to read has become more difficult.

If you listen to eAudiobooks via BorrowBox, you can adjust the playback-speed so you can enjoy listening at your own pace.

Our streaming film service, Kanopy, provides descriptive audio and closed captioning option. The Libby app for eBooks, eAudioBooks and eMagazines includes a range of accessibility features.

Reminiscing Kits

Reminiscing with your loved ones is a wonderful way to connect. Our reminiscing kits connect caregivers with quality material to reminisce and a bit of prompting. Reminiscing in a supportive environment and with a focus on strengths and positives can lift an older person's mood, reminding them and their caregivers of their resourcefulness and depth of experience.

Dyslexic Friendly Books

We have a range of resources to help those who have (or support someone with) dyslexia.

eBooks provide great flexibility for people with dyslexia as they allow the reader to adjust the typeface, font size, and background colour to suit.
