Nuneaton, 1867. When Opal Sharp's parents die from an illness and she suddenly finds herself penniless, homeless and caring for her three younger siblings, she thinks things can get no worse. But soon it becomes clear her younger siblings are both struck down with the same virus her parents. Not knowing where to turn, and with the promise of a doctor to treat them, Opal sends little Susie and Jack to the local workhouse. In a bid to get them back, their teenaged brother Charlie starts taking some risks and soon finds himself being arrested for theft. Opal's heart is broken when her brother is sent to a penal colony in Australia. Will she ever see her family again?
