Summary: Based on the autobiographies of New Zealand author Janet Frame, this three part mini-series traces the first forty years of Frame's life from her childhood years in the twenties through the incorrect diagnosis of her acute shyness as being a symptom of schizophrenia, which led to eight years of electric shock treatment in a mental institution, to her sojourn in Europe on a literary grant, the film ending with Frame's return to New Zealand in 1964. Campion structures the film elliptica.
