Revered author Miguel de Unamuno decides to publicly support the Spanish coup of July 1936 and immediately faces reprisals from the government, losing his position as rector at the University of Salamanca while many of his colleagues are imprisoned. Meanwhile, Nationalists take control of Salamanca, and General Francisco Franco moves his headquarters to the city. Unamuno, who believes he has enough influence to liberate the innocent, heads to Franco's palace, determined to beg him for clemency.
